This web journal tells a remarkable story. To most readers it will seem incredible, in the literal sense of the word, but it is nevertheless true. Whether you believe it or not is irrelevant, because the ramifications of these events will almost certainly have an impact on each and every one of you in the coming years. In deference to the medium of publication, the reasons for this site's existence are set out in question-and-answer format below.

Q : Fiction, or true story?
A : This is a true story, but you're not expected to believe it. Not yet, at least. It is aimed at rational, sceptical people. People who demand proof or, at the very least, logic and credibility. It contains facts, interpretations of facts, theory (not of the conspiracy type) and speculation, but it can be read as a work of fiction too - your choice.
Where to start? That's the problem. We could start with the future, the present, recent history (70 years ago) or pre-historic times. They all relevant, and part of the overall picture. Your author's story started in 1989, but the history of the University really began in 1954.
There is just so much to tell and events were accelerating apace, so we decided to use a simple basic html web page format which should be accessible across most platforms. The aim was to quickly update all threads of the story, for you to access as you wish. However, to help you follow and understand the context of my story I have interspersed chapters on the history of Heim into the narrative.
At the time of drafting the first few chapters of this chronicle I was not yet in possession of full historical information, but to delay publishing until I had, was not an option. This again will become obvious as you read on.

Q : What it is all about?
A : The principal function of this site is to set down an accurate history of the Heim Project covering the Settlements, Heim University, Heim Polytechnic and the various research facilities. Interspersed with this history is the story of my own journey of discovery.
It is a good, and positive, story. Certainly, it will change lives and futures but we hope that soon the World's societies will have reached a level of maturity that will enable them to deal with these changes in a rational way.
The story is about a scientific breakthrough that was made 70 years ago, the uses that it was put to, and the consequences that flow from it. It is also about scientific endeavour, engineering excellence, vision, determination, resourcefulness and above all, courage. It is about a group of like-minded and gifted people trying to excel in a post-war world of weariness, aggression, mis-information, political ineptitude, vested interest, racism, intolerance of difference and rejection of innovative thinking (unless of immediate military application).
It is not our intention here to lecture or moralise, but it is sad to see that the situation now, seventy years on, is as bad or worse than it was when the founders started their journey. We still have a world riddled with conflict, tribalism, misinformation, magical thinking, authoritarianism, and demonization.
The people in this story are by no means saints. Many are difficult to work with, self-interested and sometimes a little arrogant, but they are all rational beings, clear thinkers and are largely free of the pre-conceptions and superstitions that that have hindered much of human endeavour throughout history.
A : It's a story of many beginnings separated by time and place, all leading to a point of conjunction in the present, but branching off who knows where in the future.
The story started for your author, John Mortimer, back in 1989, at a smallholding north of Perth in Western Australia. For the Heim Project, it started somewhere between 1949 and 1953, when Burkhard Heim first proposed his unified field theory. For the people who we call the 'Neighbours' it started very very long ago.
When does it end? This is a true story and true stories really haven't got endings - they may change and branch off so much over time that they become unrecognizable as one story - but the threads march on into the future.
This, I believe, is a story of hope for humanity.
Q: Why it is being told now?
A : In the Faculty there had been much discussion and argument about when this story should be told or, indeed, whether it should be told at all but, ultimately, a consensus was reached that there was no longer any other option.
It was agreed that it must be told sooner, rather than later, and in a calm and orderly manner, so as to allay any fears and misconceptions that might arise from accidental discovery of the Heim project.
The potential consequences of piecemeal, out of context, revelations to the fourth estate and electronic media, fuelled by 'spin' and propaganda from the politico-military-industrial nexus, religious opportunists, fundamentalists and other vested interests, are dire.
Q: Why is it being told in this platform?
A : The internet was chosen as the medium for telling this story in order for it to reach the widest possible audience, free from censorship. It is being published on a low-key basis without fanfare, and it will be initially seen by most as only a work of fiction. That is an intended outcome - for who is likely to attempt to censor or suppress a work of fiction?
The main chapters of the story and the historical commentary that accompanies them were initially released serially between January 2022 and March 2023. The objective being that, in time, many readers would come to realise that they are reading about factual, and often current, events; at which point any attempt at suppression would likely be ineffective.

The author of this story is reporting events that happened to him, interspersed with information provided by the Heim University history faculty and many others. As new facts or clarifications of historical events emerge, the web pages may be changed to reflect the new information (a changed page will be flagged by a new revision number and date at the end of the page).
Q: How is the story being told?
A : I am John Mortimer, the author. This is being told partly as my story, partly as the history of the Heim Project and latterly as a chronicle of recent events.
The chapters are published initially on the Heim University intra-net and, after a short delay for feedback and revision, on the World Wide Web. Thus, the first readers of these pages are those who are part of the story and it is they who, by feedback, ensure that it becomes as accurate as is reasonably possible.
This account follows my past and present experiences, where they relate to the Project but, in doing so, they introduce you to the human side of Heim, the history, Heim today and the discoveries and assumptions about those we call the 'Neighbours'.
My story is told in the form of a chronicle of events from my involvement in the Heim project. It is constructed from extensive notes and recordings made at every point in my journeys. Fortunately, I am blessed with an almost eidetic memory and able to recall conversations quite clearly, albeit with those notes and recordings to jog it.
The History chapters do not always follow a strict chronological order, but may be linked by relevance, rather than time. Thus, the history of Heim and other matters unfolds at the appropriate junctures, so as to place my story within the larger context.
I am not a novelist, and this is not a work of fiction. It is not a fast-paced novel, full of action, intrigue and thrills and spills. If you, the reader, are expecting this, then I suggest that you read no further. This is a true and factual account of my personal experiences, written principally in my style, which is that of a journalist.
About the Author
The author is a freelance journalist with a background in science. He has been commissioned to write and publish the history of Heim and to report on unfolding events.

The University was named in honour of Burkhard Heim (1925-2001) who never became aware of the events that led to the fulfilment of his vision but, without his foresight, imagination and perseverance, what follows would not have been possible.
